U.S. Legislators Seek to Restrict President Clinton's Economic Aid for Mexico

The package of US$20 billion in economic assistance provided by US President Bill Clinton's administration to Mexico in January came under renewed assault in the US Congress during March, as Republicans in both the House of Representatives and the Senate attempted to pass legislation that would impose severe conditions on the assistance. In the House, on March 30 a handful of Republican legislators proposed a measure that would have forced the Clinton administration to submit the assistance package that it unilaterally approved for Mexico in January to a vote by the full House.
