Private Sector's Foreign Debt Reaches US$38 Billion

According to a report released by Grupo Financiero Bancomer in late December, the foreign debt incurred by Mexico's private sector increased by about 160% between 1989 and 1993 to US$38 billion. Of the total, roughly US$16.5 billion was incurred by issuing debt bonds on international markets. The report, citing statistics from the World Bank, indicated that Mexican companies issued an estimated US$7.5 billion in debt bonds during 1993, an increase of more than 70% from the total for 1992.
