On Feb. 7, a peaceful transition between two democratically elected presidents took place for the first time in Haiti's history. Jean Bertrand Aristide, the immensely popular outgoing president, administered the oath of office to his successor, Rene Preval, who was elected last December. While Preval faces tremendous challenges, most Haitians are hoping that the political stability represented by this unprecedented transition will end their country's history of violence and bring some economic gains.
