Panamanian Unions Fail to Roll Back Labor Reforms, Threaten New Protests

On Aug. 14, labor unions ended a tumultuous 10-day work stoppage that left four dead, 100 injured, and 500 under arrest. The unions have been protesting drastic changes in the 1972 labor law that were passed earlier this month by the legislature. The strike ended without President Ernesto Perez Balladares making any major concessions in the new labor law and with the more militant unions promising to take the matter to court.
