The Guatemalan presidential election picture changed quickly in recent weeks as the leading unofficial candidate for the presidency, retired Gen. Efrain Rios Montt, lost his bid to register as an official candidate in the Nov. 12 elections and his wife appeared to be his most likely replacement. Rios Montt is secretary general of the conservative Frente Republicano Guatemalteco (FRG) and president of the legislature. He tried unsuccessfully this year to evade a prohibition in Article 186 of the Constitution, which bars anyone who came to power through a coup from being a candidate for the presidency.
