In May, President Julio Sanguinetti's administration launched an aggressive austerity drive to slash the government's soaring fiscal deficit and cut the bottom out of inflation. The program which includes an increase in taxes, a sharp reduction in government spending, and an overhaul of the country's social security system has spurred strong opposition by the country's labor organizations, which held a 24-hour national strike in June to protest the government's policies.
