On March 7, former vice president Gustavo Espina voluntarily returned from political asylum in Costa Rica to stand trial on 11 charges stemming from the May 25, 1993, "self-coup" carried out by then president Jorge Serrano (see NotiSur, 05/28/93). The charges include violation of the Constitution, abuse of power, and misappropriation of funds. If convicted, Espina could face up to 13 years imprisonment
