Both the Guatemalan government and the rebel Unidad Revolucionaria Nacional Guatemalteca (URNG) have accepted a new calendar for peace negotiations proposed by the UN. If the process proceeds as outlined in the UN proposal, talks would begin again on March 1 and would culminate in the signing of a final peace accord by next August. UN officials have worked assiduously to revive the Guatemalan peace process since peace talks between the Guatemalan government and the URNG ended in an impasse at the end of December over the topic of indigenous rights and identity.
