With the aim of tapping into Panama’s vast biological resources, the Global Environment Facility (GEF) has approved the first project under the Nagoya Protocol Implementation Fund (NPIF) to support the discovery of nature-based products for the pharmaceutical and agrochemical industry, including compounds to cure cancer and tropical diseases. The three-year project will be based in the Coiba National Park, one of the country’s most important nature reserves, in the Gulf of Chiriquí, where samples of plants, fungi, and symbiotic seaweed that live on coral reefs will be collected, as well as saltwater and sweet-water bacteria.
