Tensions between Guatemala and Belize Flare Up after Belizean Soldiers Gun Down a Guatemalan Farmer

The long-standng conflict between Guatemala and Belize over a 2-kilometer wide strip dividing the two countries flared up in late January when the Belize Defense Forces gunned down a young Guatemalan farmer and wounded his brother. Guatemalan President Otto PĂ©rez Molina issued a strong statement condemning the killing and calling for a swift and thorough investigation to bring those responsible to justice. The incident prompted a meeting between Guatemalan Foreign Minister Harold Caballeros and Belizean counterpart Wilfred Elrington, but the issue remains unresolved.
