Rat infestations in some areas of Nicaragua have extensively damaged crops and stored grains, causing losses reaching into the millions of dollars and still climbing. In some of the poorest areas of the country, rats have consumed whole crops and driven campesinos off the land. Agriculture and health authorities say the worst-affected areas are the municipalities of El Rama, Muelle de Los Bueyes, and Nueva Guinea in the Region Autonoma Atlantico Sur (RAAS), and San Carlos in Rio San Juan department near the Costa Rican border.
