UN Soldiers Pull Out of Haiti; 300 Foreign Civilian Police Remain

On Nov. 30, the UN Mission in Haiti, which comprised about 650 soldiers from Canada and Pakistan, finally left the country, ending the UN's 3-year peacekeeping mission. Nevertheless, given the apparent inability of the Haitian National Police (HNP) to control rampant crime and political instability plus concerns that the HNP is still plagued by corruption the UN has decided to maintain a 300-member civilian police force in the country to continue police- training programs.
