In mid-July, US Attorney General Janet Reno announced steps to amend the US's new immigration law. The measures are expected to soften the impact of the law on tens of thousands of Central Americans who fled the civil wars of the 1980s and who have been threatened with imminent deportation from the US since the law took effect on April 1.
