The governing Partido de Liberacion Nacional (PLN) candidate for president in Costa Rica's 1998 election, Jose Miguel Corrales, was given a boost in June after Miguel Angel Rodriguez, nominee of the opposition Partido Unidad Social Cristiana (PUSC), paid a call on Mexican political chieftain Carlos Hank Gonzalez. The Mexican connection has caused a scandal in Costa Rica and strained the country's relations with Mexico.
