Since the beginning of the year, international coffee prices have risen sharply, reaching 20-month highs by early March. Nevertheless, the Central American economies which continue to depend on coffee as a primary source of foreign exchange will benefit little because most of the region's exporters already sold the majority of their 1996-1997 harvests before prices began to rise.
