After Nicaragua, Honduras has the largest foreign debt in Central America. The cost of servicing the debt has reached alarming levels and threatens all economic-restructuring plans. Since 1992, the debt has risen by 31% to more than US$4 billion. The largest creditors are the multilateral banks, which hold 57% of the total, while bilateral lenders hold 32% and commercial banks 11%.
