Economies of Latin America

Project Description

Given recent developments such as the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) and the broader Enterprise for the Americas Initiative, access to timely, authoritative information on Latin America has become more important than ever for scholars from many disciplines. Yet, accessibility to economic information is restricted by financial constraints, particularly on library collection expansion, and by the lack of up-to-date materials. The Internet, with its speed, power, and capacity to transcend physical boundaries, is a fundamental element in breaking through these constraints.

The Economies of Latin America project, funded in 1994 by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, is using the WWW to provide Latin Americanists with in-depth economic analysis published in the region. The primary objective of the project is to create a full-text database of selected economic publications, including serials, reports, and working papers produced by governmental agencies, academic research institutes, and non-governmental organizations in approximately twenty countries in Latin America. Coverage in the database begins with 1994 or 1995 volumes. At least one governmental and one non-governmental publisher from each country will be represented, although the database will contain more than two publications for certain countries, depending on factors such as population, GDP, and the quality of materials produced. Please see below for publications collected to date for transition to the web-based search environment under this project.

The database will grow as publishers sign on to the project. LADB plans to begin having these publications accessible via the searchable archive on this website beginning in May 1997 for testing and review by users. For our test version of the search interface click here Econ Search
