EcoCentral: Central America Economy & Sustainable Development

About the Project

The Latin America Data Base (LADB) at the University of New Mexico received a grant from the Fundación Ford in September 1995 to develop a new electronic information service covering economic issues and sustainable development issues in Central America. As a part of this service, LADB inaugurated a new weekly bulletin - EcoCentral: Central America Economy and Environment - which focused on the economic changes now taking place on the isthmus. (This bulletin was renamed NotiCen: Central American & Caribbean Affairs, including Cuba in February 1999.) A primary objective of the project was to contribute to regional debate on "sustainable development" in Central America.

A special goal of the EcoCentral project was to stimulate on-line dialogue among Central Americans involved directly with the issues covered in EcoCentral. Toward this end, the information service published opinion pieces written by specialists in the public, private, non-governmental, and academic sectors.

While the project was funded LADB worked with Collaborating Institutions in the region and collected links to Regional Documents that addressed economics, sustainable development, and regionalization in Central America. As a service to these Central American organizations, LADB posted links to their information on our web site.
